Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune diseases, also known as autoimmune disorders or immune-mediated diseases, are conditions in which an animal’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells, tissues, or organs. These diseases can affect various body systems and can occur in dogs, cats, and other animals. The diagnosis of autoimmune diseases in animals can be challenging, as symptoms can vary and mimic other conditions. Veterinarians often use a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests, imaging, and sometimes biopsies to make a definitive diagnosis. Treatment for autoimmune diseases aims to suppress the abnormal immune response and manage symptoms. This may involve the use of immunosuppressive medications, such as corticosteroids or other immune-modulating drugs. Supportive care, such as pain management and dietary modifications, may also be necessary depending on the specific condition.
