Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists is doing the following to provide the healthiest and safest environment we can:

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOW COVID-19 PROTOCOL FOR DVMS CLIENTS-

UPDATED PROTOCOL 3/24/2020: As the risk continues to change for COVID-19, we have updated our protocol for the health and safety of our patients, clients, staff, and community. In accordance with CDC recommendations to help preserve PPE and practice social distancing we are seeing ALL appointments curbside and only seeing urgent or emergent cases. We may be calling you to assess if it is appropriate to reschedule your appointment. If you feel your pet may be able to wait for their appointment, please feel free to call the office to reschedule. If you or someone you have been in contact with is ill or you have traveled in the last 2 weeks, we ask that you notify our office so we may best accommodate you.

Please see the below items for further details on how we will interact with you and provide exceptional care for your pet at this time through curbside services.

  • Please stay in your vehicle and call our staff for ALL We will alert our technicians and doctor that you have arrived. You will then receive a phone call from the overseeing doctor or technician to discuss your pet’s condition.
  • Based on the doctor’s discretion, the doctor may come to your vehicle, call you or video chat (i.e. Facetime) with you to discuss your pet’s condition. If this is an appointment where diagnostics are recommended, after signing an estimate, your pet will stay with us for the day and the doctor would discuss all results and a treatment plan with you by phone or video conference.
  • For technician appointments, the technician will provide you with an estimate curbside and bring your pet in for the appointment. Once complete they will return your pet to you at your vehicle.
  • Prescription refill pickups will also ALL be done curbside. If you would like to pay ahead of time you can provide a credit card by phone and we will run it manually. If you are paying at time of pick up our front office staff will charge you out carside.
  • For all new patients you will receive an email to fill out new client information electronically. We are requesting that you have this completed before your appointment. Paper forms will be accepted under limited circumstances.
  • At this time, we would prefer if you did not use cash as a method of payment. We do accept Visa, Master Card, Discover, American Express and Care Credit. For all credit card deposits and payments, our staff will come to your vehicle with a remote terminal. For all Care Credit transactions our staff will get your Care Credit information by phone and then step out to your vehicle for a signature.
  • We continue to follow all CDC guidelines with regards to rigorous disinfection of high traffic areas/items, washing our hands, and not showing up to work while ill.
  • We ask that you have patience with us as we try to provide you and your pet the best care possible.

Dr. Church earned his veterinary degree from Oregon State University in 2002. After graduation he completed a one-year internship at Cornell University followed by a cardiology residency and Master of Science degree at the University of Illinois. He finished the last year of his residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He enjoys partnering with primary care veterinarians to care for patients and their families. His special areas of interest include pericardial diseases, echocardiography, and interventional cardiovascular procedures. Dr. Church received a number of grants and awards including: the ACVIM Cardiology Resident Research Grant, the University of Illinois Small Animal Departmental Research Grant and the Salsbury Scholarship. Dr. Church is also a founding member of the Cardiac Education Group.

Dr. Riensche received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in 2004. After graduation she completed a one-year rotating internship at VCA Animal Referral and Emergency Center of Arizona. Dr. Riensche then continued her training in internal medicine with a residency at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Following her residency, Dr. Riensche relocated back to Phoenix to join the staff here, and is one of three partners in Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists. She has particular interests in nephrology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, respiratory medicine, and endocrine diseases. She shares her home with her husband Bryan, 2 dogs named Barrett Jackson and Monroe, and 1 cat named Shelby. In her spare time she enjoys sharing a comfy spot with her pets while reading, hiking and interior decorating.

Dr. Heffelman is a native of Colorado and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 2004, where she quickly discovered her love for all things in radiology. After graduation, she completed a small animal medicine and surgery rotating internship at a private practice in Colorado followed by an additional year in private practice as an associate veterinarian. Dr. Heffelman then completed a diagnostic imaging residency at Michigan State University in 2009, and became board certified later that year. She was excited to join Arizona Veterinary Specialists and, soon thereafter, to become a partner in Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists. Her special areas of interest include abdominal ultrasound, CT, and nuclear medicine.
